FPS games have a distinct look and feel, which is reflected in the category's name: players see everything-their weapons and the game world-in first person, as if they're looking through their player character's eyes. If you want to give one a try, check out the following eight great open source FPS games. It's been a long time since last having anything to report on with the Warsow, the open-source first person shooter powered by the Qfusion game engine. However, a Warsow 1.1 (or 1.5) update is still being worked on and it will be landing heavy with new features/improvements. This year we've seen Warsow open-source their game match-maker service known as Warmama. Talk about the sleeper hit of all the recent Arena Shooters I’ve covered and played. Remember Warsow Well years ago people stopped working on it because the IP owner for whatever reason didnt want to launch the game on steam. They also enabled Warsow to function as an HTTP server itself for serving file (game asset) downloads to players connecting to game servers without having to rely upon external HTTP mirrors. In my humble opinion of all the forks of Neuxiz, this is clearly the best. Xonotic is fast, it’s polished the only real thing it is lacking is players. Unfortunately, the game hasn’t been updated in quite some time. Some fine folks now forked the game and its now available on Gabens platform at long last. There was also another big update talked about on Phoronix a few months ago for the QFusion engine. ![]() The open-source engine behind Warsow now has support for TrueType/OpenType fonts, new HUD commands, an OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible renderer, performance improvements, support for loading GLSL shaders from disk, and various other renderer improvements. "Anyway, doubt we'll do any 1.0x releases or packagings anymore, all of our little manresources will go to finalizing 1.1/1.5, that'll be good milestone to think about update methods through a bit." When trying to find out about any new Warsow release this weekend for new open-source game Linux benchmarking, in this forum thread it was pointed out that they aren't looking to do any more 1.0.x point releases of the game but will be moving onto the next major release: it will be known as either v1.1 or v1.5. Unfortunately other details remain scarce on the update or when it will finally arrive for this seldom updated game. At least in 2014 we also have to look forward to Unvanquished showing its colors and hopefully a long-awaited update to Xonotic. ![]()
